Blues and Bards

Q Prompt First, in your own words, what does it say about the United States of America that the Blues developed here? There's no particular right or wrong answer, but be sure to understand the history and nature of the Blues, and be sure to relate it to anything about the USA that you are familiar with. Second, watch the clip below, and keep the ancient Greek bards in the back of your mind. How does Gary Clark's life and art echo the life and art of ancient Greek bards? Come up with several different answers. Explain a bit about each answer. Notes on substance and style • As always in this class, be sure to write more than one paragraph. There are two prompts here, so it's a good idea to write at least two paragraphs. • Write enough to explore the question. Think of ideas as you write, and then explore them. Write at least several sentences for each prompt. • There is no single "right answer" here — however, I would like to see imaginative answers based on the materials provided in Canvas. • Be sure your answers contain echoes of the materials in Canvas. Absorb the facts in your mind, then think about how to deploy them in answering the questions. Blues and Bards Blues is a music genre that borrows its roots from an African-American song form from the late nineteenth century. In the same manner, it identifies as a feeling or state of mind that results from hearing the musical elements. On the other hand, a bard identifies as a singer or poet who is fully immersed in whatever they are doing. In the United States, Blues are sung by bards who identified with the music genre’s long tradition. In this case, the bards listened and attained an understanding and appreciation of the polyrhythm created by African Americans and exploited its attributes. Again, since Blues was identified with flexible principles, it was absorbed and transformed into jazz.
